When the Old Insulation Has to Go
Old Insulation Removal is not part of every job. Clean, dry insulation can usually stay where it is. But in the Triangle we often find insulation that is doing more harm than good: crawl space batts soaked and hanging, attic fill full of rodent nests and droppings, insulation that has packed down to almost nothing, or material in the way of air sealing that has to come out so the leaks underneath can be reached.
Common reasons for removal
- Wet crawl space batts. Fiberglass under the floor absorbs humid summer air, sags and drops. It also holds moisture against the wood.
- Rodent contamination. Mice, rats and squirrels nest in attic insulation, and the droppings and urine stay behind.
- Smoke, water or roof leak damage. After a roof leak or fire, insulation in the attic often has to be replaced.
- Before spray foam. Foam needs a clean, dry surface. When we spray a roof deck or crawl space wall, old insulation in the way comes out first.
- Before a renovation. Remodels and attic conversions are a good time to clear and redo the space.
How we remove it
Attic loose fill comes out through a large vacuum hose into bags or a collection unit outside, so it does not travel through your living space. Crawl space batts are bagged by hand. We cover floors and the path in and out, and we haul everything away. After removal we can sanitize surfaces and seal the bypasses that were hidden underneath.
Materials we do not disturb
Some older homes have vermiculite attic insulation, which can contain asbestos, or pipe insulation that may. We do not remove those. If we find them, we stop and tell you, and they need testing and, if positive, a licensed abatement contractor. HomeAdvisor lists asbestos removal at roughly $1,190 to $3,255.
Removal and replacement in one visit
Most removal jobs end with new insulation: blown-in fill in the attic, new batts or a sealed crawl space underneath. Doing both together means the air sealing happens while the space is open. The quote lists removal and replacement as separate lines, so you see what each costs. Get a free estimate

Old Insulation Removal Questions
Do I need to remove old insulation before adding new?
Not usually. Dry, clean insulation can stay. Removal makes sense when it is wet, moldy, rodent-soiled or blocking air sealing or spray foam.
How do I know if my attic has vermiculite?
Vermiculite looks like grayish-brown or silvery pebbles, unlike fluffy fiberglass or gray cellulose. If you see it, do not disturb it; have it tested.
How long does insulation removal take?
Most attics take a day. Crawl spaces vary with height and how much material is down there. Replacement can often happen the same day or the next.
Can spray foam be removed?
Yes, but it is slow work since cured foam is bonded to the surface. HomeGuide lists $1.00 to $2.50 per square foot, and Fixr notes hand chipping can reach about $5.
