Raleigh Heat Starts in the Attic
Spray Foam Insulation in Raleigh deals with the same Piedmont summer we see in Durham, since both cities share the Raleigh-Durham airport weather station. Wikipedia's Raleigh page counts about 48 days a year at or above 90F. The city sits on the fall line, where the Piedmont meets the Atlantic Coastal Plain, with rolling hills sloping east, and its neighborhoods run from early 20th century houses near downtown to newer homes outside the I-540 loop.
Older neighborhoods
Houses inside the Beltline often have plaster walls, small attics with old insulation, and crawl spaces on brick foundations. We start under the floor and overhead, sealing and insulating where the payoff is largest, and handle walls during renovations or with dense-pack where wiring allows.
North Raleigh and outer neighborhoods
North Raleigh has been one of the fastest-growing parts of the city. The two-story homes there often have bonus rooms, attic air handlers and vented crawl spaces. Hot upstairs rooms and musty crawl spaces are the common complaints, and both are fixable with sealing and the right insulation.
Wet years
September 1999 brought more than 21 inches of rain to Raleigh with Hurricanes Dennis and Floyd, the wettest month on record there. Tropical systems are most likely from late summer into early October. Crawl spaces that flood even occasionally need drainage fixes before encapsulation or new insulation, and we check for water marks and wet wood before quoting.
Ducts in the attic
Many Raleigh houses built from the 1970s on have the air handler and ducts in the attic, where summer temperatures run far above the outdoor air. Sealing duct joints and either burying ducts in deep loose fill or spraying the roof deck are both options. Foam on the roof deck costs more, $1,500 to $9,000 in HomeGuide's national range, but keeps the whole duct system inside the insulated space. We price both when both would work.
Older plaster homes
In older Raleigh neighborhoods, dense-pack cellulose can fill closed plaster walls through small holes. We check for knob-and-tube wiring first and leave live wiring to an electrician.

Raleigh Questions
Do you work throughout Raleigh?
We cover Raleigh as part of our Triangle service area, with Durham as our home market. Call with your address and we will confirm a visit.
My Raleigh crawl space got wet after a big storm. Can it be encapsulated?
First the water source has to be fixed: grading, gutters, a drain or a sump. Once the crawl space stays dry, encapsulation or a floor insulation repair can follow.
What should I fix first in an older Raleigh house?
Usually the attic, sealed and insulated to R-38 or more, and the crawl space, where old batts often fail. Walls come later or during a renovation.
How much does roof deck spray foam cost?
HomeGuide lists $1,500 to $9,000 nationally for foam on the roof deck. Roof area, pitch and foam type set the price, and we quote after measuring.
