Tobacco Town on Heavy Clay
Spray Foam Insulation in Creedmoor covers a small city with a long farm history. Creedmoor was incorporated in 1905, and four tobacco warehouses went up in the early 1900s; at one point it was a larger tobacco market than Durham. Houses from that era, like the 1910 Craftsman-style Dr. Joseph Thompson house on Main Street, still stand near downtown, and newer subdivisions have filled in around the city as the Triangle has spread north.
Clay that holds water
The Creedmoor soil series, named for this area, has a subsoil that is 35 to 60 percent clay with high shrink-swell potential and very slow permeability. Water that reaches that clay tends to linger, which matters under a house. Crawl spaces on heavy clay can stay damp after rain, so drainage and a solid ground cover come before any insulation work. Where water is under control, sealing the crawl space and insulating its walls with closed-cell foam keeps humid air off the floor framing.
Older houses
Early 1900s houses in town usually have uninsulated walls, thin attic insulation and crawl spaces with old or no vapor barrier. We focus on the attic and crawl space first.
Newer homes and outbuildings
The 2020 census counted 1,953 housing units in Creedmoor, up from 1,728 in 2010. Newer homes have the usual Triangle issues: attic ductwork, bonus rooms and crawl space batts. On rural lots around Creedmoor and Lake Rogers, detached shops and garages are common, and closed-cell foam on walls and roof makes them usable in summer and stops condensation on metal.
Costs and scope
HomeGuide lists a crawl space vapor barrier at $1,200 to $4,000 and full encapsulation at $3,000 to $15,000 nationally; sealing foundation vents runs $150 to $450. On heavy clay, drainage work may come first and is separate from insulation. We write out each step and its price so you can see what is insulation and what is water control.
Shop insulation
For a metal shop, closed-cell foam runs $3.00 to $5.00 per square foot installed in HomeGuide's guide. Building height, panel profile and whether the doors are included all affect the total.
Granville County is in IECC Climate Zone 4A, so the attic targets are the same as in Durham: R-38 under North Carolina's 2018 code and up to R-60 by ENERGY STAR's retrofit guidance. Get a free estimate

Creedmoor Questions
Why is my Creedmoor crawl space always damp?
Heavy clay soil drains slowly, so water near the foundation lingers. Grading, gutters and a sealed ground cover help, and we check those before insulating.
Can you spray foam a metal shop building?
Yes. Closed-cell foam on the walls and roof insulates and stops condensation dripping from the steel.
Do you serve the Lake Rogers area?
Yes, Creedmoor and the surrounding southern Granville County area are part of our service area.
Does clay soil affect insulation?
Not the insulation itself, but slow-draining clay keeps crawl spaces damp. That moisture has to be controlled before insulation goes in, or the new insulation will get wet too.
