Old Town, Higher Ground

Spray Foam Insulation in Hillsborough covers some of the oldest houses in central North Carolina and plenty of new ones. The town was laid out in 1754, hosted the Provincial Congress in 1775 and the state ratifying convention in 1788, and its historic district still holds 18th and 19th century buildings, including the 1844 Greek Revival Old Orange County Courthouse. Around that core, newer neighborhoods have filled in along the roads to Durham and Mebane.

Historic houses

Houses of that age were built for a different idea of comfort. They often have thick framing, heavy timber, plaster walls and no insulation anywhere. Our usual approach is to work where the changes are invisible: attic floors sealed and insulated, and crawl spaces given a ground cover and floor insulation or sealed walls. We are careful with materials that cannot be undone easily. On historic framing, foam sprayed on the underside of old roof boards or into walls makes later repairs harder, so we discuss that trade-off before suggesting it.

Newer houses

Subdivision homes built in the last few decades around Hillsborough look like those elsewhere in the Triangle: attic air handlers, bonus rooms over garages, and crawl spaces with fiberglass batts. The same summer moisture issues apply, and attic sealing plus crawl space repair usually lead the list.

Elevation and the river

Hillsborough sits at about 614 feet on the Eno River, higher than most Triangle towns. The 2020 census counted 4,267 housing units with a homeowner vacancy rate of 3.0%, higher than in neighboring towns. Houses near the river and in low spots can have wetter crawl spaces, so drainage gets a look before insulation does.

Outlying areas

Outside town limits, we work on farmhouses, newer homes on large lots and houses along the Eno, west toward Efland and north toward the county line. Rural houses often have wells and crawl space plumbing, so we look at pipe runs before sealing vents. Many also have detached garages or workshops where closed-cell foam earns its cost by cutting summer heat and stopping drips from metal roofs.

One visit, one written plan

We go through the attic, crawl space and any outbuilding you want done, then send a quote with the material, depth and price for each area. Historic or not, nothing starts until you approve it in writing.

Outbuildings

Detached garages, workshops and barns on larger lots outside town can be insulated too, often with closed-cell foam on walls and roof to cut summer heat and stop condensation on metal. Get a free estimate

Old Insulation Removal in Durham, NC

Hillsborough Questions

Can you insulate a historic house without changing how it looks?

Most of the work, sealing and insulating the attic and crawl space, happens out of sight. Exterior changes like drilling siding for wall insulation are discussed first, and historic district rules may apply.

Is spray foam safe for old timber framing?

It works, but it is hard to remove later, which can complicate repairs on historic framing. We often suggest reversible options first and use foam where its benefits are clear.

Do you insulate barns and workshops near Hillsborough?

Yes. Closed-cell foam on walls and roof is common for shops and metal buildings because it insulates and stops condensation.

Can you insulate a crawl space under a house near the Eno River?

Yes, after checking drainage. Low lots near the river can have wetter crawl spaces, so water control comes first.
