A Railroad Town That Kept Growing

Spray Foam Insulation in Apex covers two very different housing stocks. The town grew around a stop at the highest point on the Chatham Railroad, completed in 1869, where trains took on water; that 'apex of the grade' gave the town its name. Downtown was designated a historic district in 1994, and the 1867 depot is a Wake County landmark. Around that core, Apex has grown fast: Wikipedia lists 13,922 housing units in 2010 and 22,151 in 2020.

Downtown and older houses

Houses near Salem Street and the old depot date from the railroad and tobacco-trading era and the decades after. They typically have little attic insulation, uninsulated walls and older crawl spaces. We focus first on the attic and the space under the floor, then walls if you are renovating.

Newer subdivisions

Most Apex homes are newer two-story houses, often with bonus rooms over the garage and air handlers in the attic. Even recent construction tends to leave gaps at kneewalls, attic hatches and garage ceilings. Upstairs rooms that run hot in July usually trace back to the attic and kneewalls.

More houses coming

The Veridea development, under site preparation since 2025, is planned for about 8,000 residential units by 2035. New homes are built to the current code, but owners who want better than minimum can ask their builder about air sealing and insulation upgrades, or call us once they move in.

Typical scopes in Apex

For a newer two-story, a common quote covers sealing the attic hatch and bypasses, topping up the attic, backing and sealing the bonus room kneewalls, and foaming the floor over the garage. For an older downtown house, the quote usually starts underneath: removing failed batts, laying a new ground cover and reinsulating or sealing the crawl space, then sealing and insulating the attic.

Costs

HomeGuide's 2026 guide lists open-cell foam at $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot and closed-cell at $3.00 to $5.00 installed. Your written estimate, after we look, is the price.

Rain and climate

Apex averages about 48.3 inches of precipitation a year, with September the wettest month at 5.27 inches. Wake and Chatham counties both fall in IECC Climate Zone 4A. A wet September after a humid summer is a good time to check whether the crawl space has stayed dry. Get a free estimate

Apex Questions

Is it worth upgrading insulation in a new Apex house?

Often, in targeted spots: kneewalls, attic hatches, the floor over the garage and attic ductwork. We check those and tell you what would make a noticeable difference.

Do you insulate older homes in downtown Apex?

Yes. Attic and crawl space work is the usual starting point, with wall insulation during renovations.

Can you spray foam the attic in a house with a bonus room?

Yes. Foam on the roof deck covers the bonus room's side attics and the main attic at once, and brings any ductwork up there inside the insulated space.

How long does a typical Apex job take?

Most attic or bonus room jobs take one day, and crawl space work one to two days. Spray foam requires the house to be empty during spraying and for at least 24 hours afterward.
